Rockmelon Honeydew Seeds : Cucumis melo

This summer-growing vine produces large, round honeydew melons, up to 20cm in diameter. The smooth, white skin encases a thick layer of sweet, greenish-white flesh. Honeydews are known for their excellent storage capabilities, lasting for several months. The delicious flesh is perfect for fruit salads, smoothies, or simply enjoyed on its own. The seeds, though mostly husk, are also edible when soaked in brine and dry-roasted.

Growing Guide:

Honeydew melons thrive in warm, long growing seasons.

  • Sowing Times:
    • Temperate Climates: October-November (after the last frost)
    • Subtropical Climates: September-November
    • Tropical Climates: April-July (dry season)
  • Sowing Methods: Sow seeds directly into the garden (10-20mm deep) or start them indoors in seedling pots. Bottom heat is recommended in cooler areas.
  • Germination: Optimal soil temperature is 23-35°C (73-95°F). Expect germination in 4-10 days.
  • Soil Requirements: Use fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6-6.5.
  • Spacing: Plant in rows 1.5 meters apart, with 1 meter between plants, on raised mounds.
  • Training: Pinch out the growing tip to encourage branching. Once fruit develops, pinch back the vine two leaves beyond the fruit.
  • Vertical Growing: Where space is limited, melons can be grown vertically with support (e.g., onion bags). This also helps prevent fungal issues.
  • Preventing Rot: Place a flat piece of wood under ripening melons to prevent contact with damp soil.
  • Harvesting: Harvest when the melon easily slips from the stem (10-16 weeks after sowing).
  • Companion Planting: Honeydew melons grow well with sweetcorn and sunflowers. Avoid planting near potatoes.
