The Red Tamarillo is a perennial fruiting tree native to the Andes Mountains of Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia. Known for its ornamental appeal and medicinally useful fruit, it thrives in Sub-Tropical and Tropical climates with warm, humid conditions and at least 1000 mm (40 inches) of annual rainfall.
The Red Tamarillo typically has a single trunk with lateral branches and large, pungent leaves. Its pinkish-white flowers form in clusters of up to 50, often blooming year-round in tropical climates. The egg-shaped fruits grow up to 10 cm (4 inches) long and range in color from yellow and orange to red and purple.
Fruit Production: Begins around 2 years, peaks at 4 years, and plants live 5–12 years.
Note: Cross-pollination with other Solanum species can result in unpalatable fruit.
