Rat-Tailed Radish
The Rat-Tailed Radish is an ancient heirloom variety believed to have been introduced to Europe from Eastern Asia. Historical records show that its pods were pickled in Europe as early as the 17th century.
Unlike traditional radishes grown for their roots, this variety is cultivated for its edible pods, which are fleshy and grow up to 15–17 cm long. Plants may produce either green pods or purple-tinged pods. The purple-podded variety features mauve flowers with white centers and purple stems, while green-podded plants have plain white flowers and green stems, both offering the same delicious flavor. The flowers attract pollinators and beneficial insects, such as hoverflies, to the garden.
This fast-growing plant is highly versatile and easy to cultivate, making it a favourite for gardeners.
The pods are edible and can be enjoyed raw, either as a snack or in salads. Their flavor is similar to raw radish root but milder, offering a delightful, pungent bite.
