Pumpkin Jarrahdale (Cucurbita maxima)
The heirloom Jarrahdale Pumpkin is a uniquely beautiful variety known for its ribbed, pale grey to blue-green skin and rich, stringless orange flesh — perfect for baking, soups, and especially pies. Each vigorous vine typically produces 3 to 5 fruits, with individual pumpkins weighing 3 to 6kg and measuring 25 to 35cm in diameter. The plants grow to a height of 30–60cm and spread 3–5 metres.
Health & Nutrition
Pumpkin is rich in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant converted to vitamin A in the body. Its health benefits include:
- Supporting healthy vision
- Boosting immune function
- Promoting youthful skin
- Aiding in weight management
Sowing & Growing Guide
- Direct sow outdoors after the last frost, or start indoors 2–3 weeks prior to transplanting.
- Use Jiffy pots or biodegradable containers to avoid root disturbance.
- Sow 2–3 seeds per group or 2 seeds per pot, do not thin.
- Germination: 7–10 days at 22°C.
- Spacing: Allow 3m between plants for proper growth.
- Keep soil consistently moist for optimal fruit development.
Harvesting Tips
Harvest before the first autumn frost, once foliage starts to die back and the pumpkin’s stem becomes dark green and begins to shrivel.
- Cut the stem with a sharp knife, leaving 7–10cm attached.
- Handle pumpkins carefully to avoid bruising or stem breakage.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area — do not wash or get wet after harvest to prevent rot.
