How to Grow Radish Purple Sango Microgreens
- Family: Brassicaceae
- Binomial Name: Raphanus sativus
- Seeds per Gram: 80-90
- Germination Temperature: 8-30°C
- Germination Time: 2-5 days
- Days to Harvest: 8-12 days
- Soaking Seeds: Not required
Preparation:
- Location: Microgreens can be grown indoors or outdoors in a spot with good, indirect sunlight. A sunny windowsill works well, or you can use a grow lamp or wide-spectrum light source
- Outdoor Growing: Choose a protected spot to shield the seedlings from strong winds and extreme temperatures. Protect seedlings from pests such as slugs and snails
Growing Materials:
- Shallow container with drainage holes (e.g., seed tray or used fruit punnet)
- Growing medium (seed-raising mix, fine compost, potting mix, or coir)
- Garden mister with filtered water
Method:
- Optional: Soak larger seeds overnight in warm water to speed up germination.
- Fill the container with 3-4 cm of growing medium, pressing gently to create a flat surface and moistening well.
- Sprinkle seeds evenly over the surface, aiming for even coverage without the seeds touching.
- Cover seeds with a thin layer of soil (a few millimeters thick), gently pressing larger seeds down if needed. Mist lightly and cover with a clear lid or plastic wrap, leaving small gaps for airflow.
- Place in a sunny spot or near a light source, avoiding overly strong direct sunlight to prevent scorching.
- Mist daily to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Germination should occur in 2-5 days at temperatures of 8-30°C.
- Once germinated, remove the cover and continue misting daily until ready for harvest.
How to Harvest:
- Microgreens are ready to harvest once the first true leaves have developed and the seedlings are 2-6 cm tall, typically 2-5 days after germination
- To harvest, cut the stems just above the soil level using scissors or pull the entire seedling out, roots and all
- Wash gently with filtered water and pat dry. Consume immediately as microgreens wilt quickly and lose flavor once cut
- Store in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator for 1-2 days
Enjoy fresh, crunchy, and flavorful radish microgreens with every harvest!
