Lactuca sativa
Packet Sizes: 350 seeds, 5g, 25g

Description
Buttercrunch lettuce is a highly popular variety known for its luxurious, buttery texture and tender, crumpled leaves. The soft, loose heads have creamy yellow centers and are heat-resistant, making them ideal for cooler regions. This lettuce produces crisp, thick, and juicy leaves that are perfect for fresh salads and sandwiches. Space lettuce plants 20cm apart for optimal growth.

Key Features

  • Plant Type: Annual lettuce
  • Head Type: Loose, crumpled, with buttery texture
  • Leaf Color: Creamy yellow interior
  • Heat Resistance: Ideal for cooler regions, can tolerate some heat
  • Harvest Time: Baby leaves in 28 days, full-size heads in 50-70 days
  • Spacing: 20cm between plants

Care & Sowing Instructions

Sowing

  • Depth: Sow seeds approximately 5mm deep
  • Method: Direct sow or in punnets
  • Best Time: Plant year-round except during extreme heat or cold
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun, but partial shade in warmer months can extend the growing season
  • Germination Time: Seeds will emerge in 2-10 days depending on the weather and conditions

Growing Tips

  • Keep the soil consistently moist during dry spells
  • Harvest baby leaves in 28 days, and full heads in 50-70 days
  • Harvesting: Pick leaves individually rather than pulling the whole plant to encourage continuous growth
  • Protect plants from extreme heat using shade cloth
  • Best when harvested just before consumption for peak flavor and freshness
  • Soil: Prefers fertile soil and plenty of water

Sprouting Lettuce Seeds in Warm Weather
In warmer temperatures, soak seeds in water for 16 hours before planting in a well-lit area to increase germination rates. While red light has been shown to boost germination, sunlight or full-spectrum light is almost as effective. Soaking seeds in the dark may lower germination success.

Another effective method for improving germination is soaking seeds in cool water for 16-24 hours. This has resulted in up to 97% germination when planted in warmer conditions. Soaking for less than 16 hours has minimal impact on germination.

Extending the Lettuce Season
To help protect lettuce from the heat:

  • Mulching: Apply 4-6 cm of straw or wood chip mulch to keep the soil cool and retain moisture
  • Shading: Use shade cloth, row covers, or companion planting with taller plants like pumpkins to prevent bolting and extend growing time (up to 3-5 weeks)
  • Planting: Sow lettuce often, even late in the season, using heat-tolerant varieties, soaking seeds, and applying mulch and shade to extend the harvest window.

Lettuce Care Summary

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist, especially in dry weather
  • Temperature Management: Use shade and mulch for extended growing seasons in warm weather
  • Harvesting: Pick individual leaves or whole heads based on your preferred maturity stage
  • Storage: Best eaten fresh, but baby leaves can be refrigerated for short-term storage.

By following these care instructions, you can enjoy fresh, tender Buttercrunch lettuce for an extended growing season.
