When to Sow Leek Seeds
Leeks can be grown year-round in most climates. However, avoid planting during extreme heat or cold, as these conditions can affect germination and growth. Check the best time to sow leeks based on your local climate.

Planting and Growing

• Best Location: Full sun, at least 6 hours per day
• Soil: Well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter like aged manure or compost
• Sow Direct: Plant seeds 5mm deep, 12cm apart, with rows spaced 45cm apart
• Germination: Seeds will germinate in 10-14 days at a temperature of 18-23°C
• Transplanting: Seedlings should be 5-10cm tall before transplanting. Space plants 12cm apart with rows 45cm apart
• Sowing Tip: For even seed spacing, mix seeds with sand or fine potting mix, or use a seed dispenser. Press lightly into the soil after sowing to ensure good seed contact.

Fertilizing

• General: If the soil is well-prepared, no additional fertilization is needed.
• For Poor Soil: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer when transplanting or when seedlings are 5-10cm tall.
• Growth Support: Apply liquid fertilizer at the recommended rate and frequency while plants are maturing.

How to Grow Leeks

• Watering: Water deeply when the soil is dry about 5cm below the surface. Water in the early morning or late afternoon and avoid wetting the leaves to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
• Thinning: Thin seedlings when large enough, leaving approximately 12cm between plants.
• Blanching (Optional): To enhance tenderness and flavor, exclude light by hilling soil up around the base of the plants or covering them with opaque containers.
• Growing Tip: Leeks need a lot of space to grow, so thinning and ensuring proper spacing are essential for healthy plants.

Harvesting

• Harvest Time: Leeks will be ready to harvest in about 100 days.
• How to Harvest: Leeks are best harvested when large enough for eating. Gently pull the whole plant from the soil, shaking off any excess dirt.
• Storage: For short-term storage, wrap harvested leeks in a damp paper towel and place them in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge. Leeks can remain in the ground until needed.
