When to Sow Kohlrabi Seeds

Kohlrabi can be cultivated throughout the year in most climates. However, avoid sowing during extreme heat or cold, as it may hinder germination and growth.

Preparing for Planting

Kohlrabi thrives in full sun or partial shade, requiring a minimum of three hours of direct sunlight daily.

For healthy growth, choose well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Prepare the soil by thoroughly removing weeds, loosening it through digging, and incorporating aged animal manure or compost. Maintain a weed-free environment before planting. For detailed guidance on soil preparation, click here.

Kohlrabi can also be grown in containers. If opting for container cultivation, select a variety suited for pots. Use a high-quality potting mix and ensure the container is spacious enough—ideally a minimum of 40 liters. Container-grown plants may require additional fertilization during the growing season to support robust growth.

Sowing Kohlrabi Seeds

No pre-treatment (such as soaking or stratification) is required for kohlrabi seeds.

For best results, sow seeds directly into the garden:

  • Plant seeds 5mm deep and space them 20cm apart in rows 40cm apart.

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering or letting it dry out completely.

  • Seeds typically germinate within 3-10 days at soil temperatures of 16-27°C.

  • Young seedlings should be protected from pests, pets, and harsh weather conditions until they establish.

Growing Kohlrabi

During the growing season, kohlrabi may require occasional watering. Check soil moisture by scratching about 5cm below the surface—water deeply if it feels dry. Watering is best done in the early morning or late afternoon, avoiding direct contact with the leaves to prevent fungal infections. Learn more about proper watering techniques here.

If the soil was well-prepared, additional fertilization may not be necessary. However, for poor soil conditions or to boost growth, consider applying a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruits and vegetables:

  • Use a slow-release fertilizer at the recommended rate when transplanting or when seedlings reach 5-10cm in height.

  • Apply liquid fertilizer at the suggested rate during fruiting or flowering stages for optimal development.

Harvesting Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is typically ready for harvest within 55-75 days.

  • Leaves: Harvest when they are large enough for consumption by pinching off outer leaves while leaving some for continuous growth. Consume fresh or store short-term in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator.

  • Stems: Harvest once they reach a suitable size. Cut individual stems just above ground level, trimming foliage 1-2cm above the stem. Store kohlrabi in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator. For extended storage, it can be pickled or blanched and frozen.
