When to Plant
Ginger is a warm-season crop best planted in spring or early summer when soil temperatures are consistently between 20–30°C. Ideal for tropical and subtropical climates; in cooler regions, use containers and move indoors during winter.
Location & Soil
Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (minimum 3 hours direct sunlight daily; morning sun with afternoon shade preferred)
Soil: Well-draining, rich in organic matter
Soil Prep: Loosen soil, weed thoroughly, and enrich with aged compost or manure
Container Growing: Recommended for cool climates – use a minimum 40L pot with quality potting mix
How to Plant
Depth: Plant rhizomes just below the surface (approx. 2–3 cm deep) with growing points (eyes) facing up
Spacing:15 cm apart
Watering: Keep soil just moist until shoots appear; do not overwater
How to Grow
Watering: Water deeply and regularly to keep soil evenly moist (not soggy); avoid wetting foliage
Feeding:
Add slow-release fertiliser when shoots reach 5–10 cm
Apply liquid fertiliser during spring and summer for growth boost
Maintenance: Reduce watering as plants die back in autumn; replant divided rhizomes in spring if crowded
Climate Tips: In colder areas, cut plants back or bring pots indoors during winter
Harvest & Storage
Days to Maturity:120–160 days
Harvesting: Harvest as needed when rhizomes are plump, or lift entire plant once leaves yellow and die back
Storage:
Short-term: Store unpeeled rhizomes at room temperature or in an airtight container in the fridge
Long-term: Peel and freeze, pickle, candy, or dry
