Blue Cobs | Drought Tolerant | Heirloom Variety
An American heirloom variety traditionally grown by the Hopi people, Blue Hopi produces beautiful blue kernels on cobs measuring around 18cm long. Plants grow to approximately 180cm tall and yield 1 to 2 slender cobs each. Harvest early for use like sweet corn, or allow to mature fully for drying and grinding into richly coloured, nutritious corn flour. Exceptionally drought tolerant, this variety thrives in hot and dry conditions, making it well suited to water-wise gardening.
Growing Information
- Climate: Sow in spring once all danger of frost has passed. Suitable for temperate and warm regions.
- Soil & Position: Prefers full sun and well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or aged manure.
- Sowing Depth: 20–30mm deep
- Spacing: Plant seeds 30cm apart in rows 75cm apart.
- Pollination Tip: For best results, plant in blocks (not single rows) to promote good pollination and well-filled cobs.
- Watering: Moderate water needs; once established, plants are drought tolerant but benefit from regular watering during cob formation.
- Harvest: Approximately 90–100 days after sowing. Harvest when kernels are fully coloured. For flour, allow the cobs to dry completely on the plant before harvesting.
