Carrot - Nantes Seeds (Daucus carota)
Nantes is a classic heirloom carrot variety loved for its uniform shape, excellent flavour, and smooth texture. It produces bright orange, nearly coreless, cylindrical roots that grow up to 18cm long. The roots are sweet, crunchy, and tender—ideal for fresh eating, juicing, cooking, or long-term storage.
Because of its consistent size and flavour, Nantes is a favourite among home gardeners and market growers alike. The roots store well after harvest and maintain their sweetness and texture for an extended period.
How to Grow – Carrot (Nantes)
- Sowing Time: Early Spring through to Autumn in most regions.
- Planting Method: Sow direct into garden beds; carrots do not transplant well.
- Depth: Sow seeds 5mm deep.
- Spacing: Thin seedlings to 3–5cm apart once established; rows should be 20–25cm apart.
- Position: Full sun; loose, well-drained, sandy or loamy soil free from stones.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist throughout germination and growth, avoiding overwatering.
- Germination: May take 10–20 days. Keep soil damp and cool during this period.
- Harvest: Ready in 70–80 days. Harvest when roots reach desired size.
Tips for Best Results
- Avoid high nitrogen fertilisers as they may cause forking or excessive top growth.
- Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Successive sowings every 3 weeks can provide a continuous harvest.
