Cabbage Seeds
Cabbage is a highly versatile, cool-weather vegetable perfect for any garden. Renowned for its flavour and nutritional value, it flourishes in fertile, well-drained soil with access to sunlight or partial shade. With proper attention, cabbage matures within 50-140 days, yielding tightly packed heads or edible leaves based on the variety. Easy to cultivate, cabbage is a fantastic addition for fresh consumption or long-term preservation like pickling or fermentation.
Growing Guide for Cabbage
Ideal Sowing Period
Plant cabbage seeds during cooler seasons. Check your regional climate calendar for the optimal sowing time, avoiding extremely warm conditions to prevent premature bolting.
Soil and Site Preparation
- Select a location with full sunlight or partial shade (minimum 3 hours of direct sun daily).
- Enrich soil with organic matter such as compost or aged manure.
- Thoroughly weed and loosen the soil to ensure good drainage and a healthy growing environment.
Planting Instructions
Direct Sowing
- Plant seeds 5mm deep, leaving 25-60cm between plants and 40-60cm between rows.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering.
- Seeds germinate in 4-10 days at a soil temperature of 18-24°C.
Starting with Seedlings
- Use seed trays or containers filled with a nutrient-rich seed-raising mix.
- Sow seeds 5mm deep and water to maintain soil moisture.
- Once seedlings sprout (4-10 days), transplant them outdoors when they are 5-10cm tall and have their first true leaves.
- Maintain the same spacing as for direct sowing.
Caring for Cabbage Plants
- Water deeply when the top 5cm of soil feels dry, preferably in the morning or late afternoon.
- Avoid wetting the leaves to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
- If soil was well-prepared, additional fertilizer may not be needed. Otherwise, use a high-nitrogen or leafy-green-specific fertilizer to encourage growth.
Harvesting Tips
- Harvest cabbage heads when they are firm and compact (50-140 days). Use a sharp knife to cut them at ground level.
- For non-heading varieties, pick mature outer leaves individually or harvest the entire plant.
- Store fresh heads in the refrigerator or preserve them through pickling or fermentation for extended use.
