Growing Instructions:
When to Sow Bitter Melon Seeds
Bitter melon is a warm-season crop and should be sown after the danger of frost has passed. Use the climate zone guide below to find the best sowing time for your region.
Preparation
Choose a full sun location (at least 6 hours daily).
Use well-drained soil, enriched with plenty of organic matter like aged compost or manure.
Weed and loosen the soil thoroughly before planting.
Maintain a weed-free area until seeds are established.
How to Sow Bitter Melon Seeds
Scarify seeds by gently nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing with sandpaper. Alternatively, soak seeds for 12–24 hours to soften the seed coat.
Sow seeds directly into the garden at 15mm deep and 60cm apart, with 130–160cm between rows.
Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy.
Germination occurs in 10–15 days at soil temperatures of 25–28°C.
Protect young seedlings from pests, pets, and harsh weather.
📌 Tip: Bitter melon is frost-sensitive—only sow outdoors when temperatures are warm and stable.
Growing Bitter Melon
Water deeply when the top 5cm of soil feels dry. Avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.
If soil is fertile, additional fertilising is optional. However, for extra growth:
Apply slow-release fertiliser when seedlings are 5–10cm tall.
Use a liquid fertiliser during flowering and fruiting.
Support growth:
Bitter melon vines can sprawl or climb.
Provide a strong trellis or allow 2m² of space per plant if growing on the ground.
Use twine or ties to gently guide vines onto supports.
How to Harvest Bitter Melon
Ready in about 75 days from sowing.
Pick fruit when young, tender, and glossy for best flavour.
Cut fruit from the vine, leaving a small portion of stem attached.
Store in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator.
