How to Grow Beetroot - Bull’s Blood

Preparation:

  • Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours daily).
  • Requires well-drained, loose soil enriched with compost or aged manure.
  • Loosen soil to spade depth for optimal root development.

Sowing Instructions:

  • Direct sow seeds in the garden, 15mm deep, 10cm apart, with rows 50cm apart.
  • Germination: 5-10 days at soil temperatures of 10-30°C.
  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged until seedlings establish.
  • Optional: Soak seeds overnight for improved germination.

Growing Tips:

  • Water when soil is dry 5cm below the surface.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing to prevent excessive leaf growth over root formation.
  • Thin seedlings if necessary to maintain 10cm spacing between plants.

Harvesting:

  • Baby leaves: Harvest at 35 days by snipping outer leaves at the base.
  • Roots: Ready in 55 days; gently pull or lift with a garden fork.
  • Store in a perforated bag in the fridge or pickle for long-term storage.
