ALYSSUM - Easter Bonnet Form Mix

The Alyssum: Lobularia maritima

It is a charming and versatile flowering plant prized for its pretty pastel blooms, sweet honey fragrance, and easy-care nature. This delightful mixture contains seven beautiful shades, making it an excellent choice for adding soft colour and fragrance to garden beds, borders, pots, and containers. Its compact growth habit and ability to readily self-seed make it a wonderful addition to both established and cottage-style gardens.

Flowers and Fragrance: Alyssum produces masses of small, delicate flowers in a beautiful mixture of pastel shades. The blooms have a lovely sweet honey fragrance and are particularly attractive to butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. As a free-flowering plant, Alyssum can provide colour over a long period when grown in suitable conditions.

Growth Habits and Appearance: Alyssum is a compact, low-growing annual or short-lived perennial that generally reaches around 15-20cm in height. Its small, spreading growth habit makes it ideal for filling gaps between larger plants or creating a soft flowering edge along garden beds and borders. When conditions are favourable, it can readily self-seed and new plants may appear naturally beneath established plants.

Cultivation: Alyssum is relatively easy to grow and performs best in full sun with moderate watering. Sow the tiny seeds directly onto the surface of well-prepared soil and gently press them into place rather than covering them deeply. Seeds generally germinate within 7-14 days, with flowering expected approximately 60-90 days after sowing. Allow around 20cm between plants to provide room for growth and good air circulation.

Garden Uses: The compact nature of Alyssum makes it particularly useful for edging garden beds and borders, filling pots and containers, and planting beneath taller plants such as roses. Its low-growing habit can also provide useful ground cover and act as a living mulch beneath established plants.

Pollinators and Wildlife: The fragrant flowers are highly attractive to butterflies and other pollinating insects, making Alyssum a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Its long flowering period provides a reliable source of nectar throughout the growing season.

Self-Seeding: One of Alyssum's appealing characteristics is its ability to self-seed naturally. In suitable conditions, fallen seed can germinate around established plants and beneath their canopies, allowing this charming flower to return year after year.
