How to Grow Basil - Genovese
When to Sow
Basil is a warm-season crop. Refer to local climate guidelines to determine the best sowing time in your region.
Soil & Sun Requirements
- Sunlight: Requires at least 6 hours of full sun daily.
- Soil: Well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with added compost or aged manure.
- Container Growing: Use a minimum 10L pot with a high-quality potting mix. Additional fertilization may be needed for healthy growth.
How to Sow Basil Seeds
Direct Sowing (Garden Bed)
- Sow seeds 2mm deep and 30cm apart.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Germination occurs in 5-10 days at soil temperatures of 18-35°C.
- Protect young seedlings from pests and harsh weather.
Raising Seedlings (Trays or Pots)
- Use seed-raising mix or starter pellets.
- Sow seeds 2mm deep, keeping the soil moist but not wet.
- Germination occurs in 5-10 days at 18-35°C.
- Transplant seedlings when they have true leaves and reach 5-10cm tall.
- Space plants 30cm apart in the garden.
Tip: Seeds can also be sown using the scatter method—lightly roughen the soil, scatter seeds evenly, and cover with a fine layer of soil.
Care & Maintenance
- Watering: Water when the soil feels dry 5cm below the surface. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal issues.
-
Fertilising:
- If soil is well-prepared, additional fertiliser is not necessary.
- For a growth boost, apply a high-nitrogen fertiliser or one formulated for leafy greens.
- Use slow-release fertiliser when transplanting or liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
- Thinning: Once seedlings are strong enough, thin them to 30cm apart for optimal growth.
Harvesting & Storage
- Harvest Time: 60-80 days after sowing.
- How to Harvest: Pick outer leaves as needed, ensuring some remain on the plant for continuous growth.
-
Storage:
- Use fresh for best flavour.
- Store short-term in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge.
- For long-term storage, freeze whole leaves or chop and freeze in ice cubes.
