Alfalfa sprouts are cherished for their delightful nutty flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Packed with essential vitamins (B1, B2, C, E, K, D, and A), minerals (phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, sulfur, zinc), and a substantial amount of protein (35%) and fiber, they offer a concentrated burst of goodness. For maximum nutrient absorption, expose your sprouts to full sunlight on the fifth day of growth. While alfalfa can be cultivated year-round, optimal germination occurs between 16-25°C. Avoid sprouting during excessively hot weather for best results.

Grow Alfalfa Sprouts - Getting Started

  1. Rinse seeds: Thoroughly rinse 2 tablespoons (or desired amount) of alfalfa seeds to remove debris.
  2. Soak seeds: Place the rinsed seeds in a quart jar or sprouting container. Add ¼ to ½ cup of cool water. Cover with a sprouting screen or lid and soak for 8 hours or overnight.

Sprouting Process

  1. Drain: Empty all water from the jar.
  2. Air circulation: Invert the jar over a bowl at an angle to allow drainage and airflow.
  3. Rinsing: Rinse and drain the seeds 2-3 times daily.
  4. Light: Once tiny sprouts appear (after about 3 days), move the jar to indirect light for leaf growth. Avoid direct sunlight.
  5. Continue rinsing and draining: Keep rinsing and draining 2-3 times daily for another 2-3 days, or until sprouts reach desired length (about 8-10cm).

Harvesting and Storing

  1. Drain thoroughly: Drain the sprouts completely.
  2. Remove hulls: Pick out any remaining seed hulls.
  3. Enjoy: Eat the sprouts immediately or store them in a covered container.
